Mod Monday Mood board #3 - Sherry's! (ANNOUNCEMENT)

A Soho staple for the past 45 years, Sherry’s as a shop, and as a brand, has evolved over the years, adapting to everything thrown at it as an independent family-run business in a fast-changing retail sector and based city that is constantly on the move. Four core elements have not changed, however: a proud independent attitude; the exclusivity of the products; a deep understanding of the ‘Mod’ attitude and style; and commitment to quality at good prices.

Despite the changes, and due to these principles, Sherry’s has become much beloved. Regular, loyal customers are based far and wide, and people new to the scene are constantly walking in and falling in love with the place. This, along with staff new and old, Sherry’s does feel like one big family.

This week, of a special celebration coming in mid-November (details below), we’re going to be taking a look at the four elements that make up Sherry’s.

SHERRY’S - The label

The special black and gold Sherry’s label can be found in the in the breast of three button suits, on the back of accessories, and on the inner neck of some of the finest paisley and polka dot shirts on the market. From suit to shirt, all products are limited in quantity, being produced in small batches to encourage sustainability and maximise exclusivity for the wearer.

Initially designed at our London stores, the vast majority of Sherry’s products begin their life in West Yorkshire, in a mill which itself is over 90 years old, and is recognised for exceptional fabrics that traditional and modern design.

Everything is then bought down to be tailored in London by expert craftsman that have been working with the shop since the label’s inception.

Finally, it’s put onto the shelves in the stores in Soho, and online. But once it’s gone, it’s gone.

SHERRY'S - The shop

First opening its doors in the Spring of 1979, Sherry’s was born the same year that the Mod revival had exploded on the streets of Britain. Initially stocking parkas and the odd mod brand, the store was visited by anyone who had flocked to Carnaby Street after having seen Quadrophenia for the first time.

It was with the advent of Sherry’s own label, however, that the store came into its own. Sherry’s ready-to-wear suits would become famous in their own right, with the store becoming a one-stop shop for anyone - mod or not - needing to look sharp, with shoes, shirts, and accessories for any occasion on offer.

Having been based on Ganton Street and Broadwick Steet, today the store is located on 11 Poland Street, offering a bespoke and made to measure service, as well as its iconic three-button suits and casualwear. It’s understood that most customers want to be walking out the shop looking top notch, and hence an express same-day alteration service is offered, with an average turn-around time of a couple of hours.

Its longevity and reputation for good quality have meant a few famous faces have become good friends of shop, including Paul Weller, Liam Gallagher, Steve Craddock, Neville Staple, Skepta, Ru-Paul, Whoopi Goldberg...the list goes on.

THE FACE - The boutique

The Face, Sherry’s boutique, has been in and around Carnaby Street since 1985. Offering a more exclusive range and a more bespoke service, it is now located at 25 D’Arblay Street.

Sherry’s suits in-stock, as well as a made-to-measure service, there is also on offer is an impressive selection of Ben Sherman shirts, a curated array of Gabicci and Art Gallery knitwear, and unique silk paisley and polka dot shirts. A fantastic selection of accessories and shoes is also available.

Being in such a great location and with the shop having such a warm and friendly atmosphere, The Face has been home to most of Sherry’s in-store events over the past few years.

SHERRY’S SOUL SOCIETY

Founded in early 2024 on a bit of a whim by some Sherry’s staff, Sherry’s Soul society has quickly become very popular and a well established part of the London northern soul scene.

Committing to being a vinyl-only DJ collective, the soul society offers up the best in

northern soul, motown, and r’n’b, but isn’t against just playing a few Mod classics when the time calls. With regular gigs at well loved venues such as The Camden Eye and The Marquis, Covent Garden, there is much more to come in 2025.

And we are delighted to announce, as part of our celebrations of the 45th anniversary of Sherry’s, an in-store gig by the Soul Society will take place Saturday 16th November!

The boys will be spinning the best in northern soul and a few Mod classics from 5pm-8pm. Refreshments will be provided, and there will be exclusive concessions on items in store. This ones for all the faces, old and new, so do come down and celebrate with us!
